As rebelutionaries, we have the passionate desire to get out in the the world, and make an impact on other people’s lives, for the glory of God. However, as teenagers, we lack the practical ability to do so, in most cases. Until the age of 16 (in Alabama, at least), you cannot drive yourself anywhere, and until the age of 18, you cannot sign a legal contract, or vote. So, how are we to “Do Hard Things” when we cannot even “Do” anything? Simple. The world has invented a tool that works perfectly for this. I LOVE it!
Personally, I call it… The Internet!!! God has given us an incredible gift, that, if used rightly, can be the most powerful evangelical (or expositional teaching) tool ever to come into existence, since the Printing Press. The Printing Press changed the world, by widely publishing the works of people such as Luther, and others around that time. We can do the same.
As evidenced merely by the fact that you are reading this post, it is very easy to reach out to a very large audience, as teenagers living at home. You can write something in 30 minutes, it be available to millions of people a minute later, and change 100 lives within a few days. Take The Rebelution, for example. Two sixteen-year-olds one day decided to start blogging,, writing on a default-themed blogger-hosted blog, preaching a message from the Bible, to Do Hard Things, and rebel against the low expectations of the culture. Three years later, they have changed thousands of lives, won elections for people, had two national conferences, written a book, and started a movement affecting all of America. I started blogging about a month ago. Then, I was a lazy homeschooled 15 year old, pure geek. I was the definition of a geek. Look up “geek” in the dictionary, it will have my name (no, not really). I took geek “tests” online, getting titles such as “nerd god” and such. However, a mere month later, here I am, getting about 100 views a day, (except for the past few days, because I did not post anything), having inspired a blog, myself, and helped a Rebelutionary build her own blog. I am a VERY active member in my church, helping with security, media, and even the offering, plus helping set up EVERY single event at the church. I’ve not only read Do Hard Things, I’ve gotten another friend to read it. He liked it so much, his parents are now reading it. After that, I am going to let another friend borrow it, while I convinced my brother to read the family copy. I came out of last School Year a disgrace, partly from medical problems, but mostly from being incredibly lazy. I read NINE school books all year. Now, I am heading into this coming school year with about twice as much work to do per day, and a “BRING IT ON!” mentality. My Big Hard Thing currently, is to finish over half of the remaining books in our curriculum, which is currently at 35 & 1/2. (means I’ll have to finish 16 or more, but I am aiming for quite a bit more than that). During the upcoming trip to OK that are family is having, I am going to be reading Calvin’s Institutes Of The Christian Religion, to occupy my time. It is the last book in our curriculum, and I will get credit for it.
There are MANY other bonuses to doing your spiritual work on the Internet. My favorite one, is nobody knows how old you are! I know YOU know my age (15), but, when I am commenting on a public website, I can speak freely, and people will treat it as if it came from an adult, because, as far as they know, it did, and there is nothing to indicate otherwise. I used to participate in a Linux forum, where people would ask various technical questions about problems they were having with their computer. I enjoyed participating, because, I could offer advice that would solve their problems, and they would actually consider it, because they did not realize it was written by a 14/15 year old. I actually had someone E-mail me once to encourage me, because I had been defending Creation in a Evolution thread on the part of the forum where people just hang out (keep in mind that this is a geek forum, with 99% of the people there being non-believers, and even satanic). The E-mail was obviously formatted for an adult. The person saw me defending my faith, and thought I was an adult. That really encouraged me.
Another of my favorite advantages to using the Internet for your ministry, is that you can read over the content of your message as many times as you want to, before you post it. In a real conversation, if you started up a conversation with someone you had never met, about Christianity, and the Gospel, and you are not skilled in it, then you will make mistakes, and instantly wish you hadn’t said them. Well, you can do that with the Internet! No matter how you are communicating with them over the Internet(unless it is a video chat), you always get to read over what you are about to say, before you say it. And, if it is blogging, you can always go and edit a post you had written before.
In other words, there is no excuse! Being younger than 16 or 18 does not prevent you from glorifying God, and impacting the world, from your home. If you do not have Internet, one of your friends might, and your library most likely does. THERE IS NO EXCUSE!
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in
purity.”~1st Timothy 4:12~
